Scholarship, Community Outreach and Educational Activities

The goal of the NOF is to assist the NOA in its efforts to advance the visual health of minority populations, while increasing the recruitment of underrepresented minorities into schools and colleges of optometry. All tax deductible donations go towards achieving this goal.

Dr. Will G. Kelley Fun Run Donation

Dr. Kelley was the second black graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Optometry, who made countless contributions to the field and to the NOA. As he was a proponent of staying healthy, through physical activity, the annual fun run was started, in his honor, to raise money for deserving students.

“Visioning the Future” HBCU Mentorship Program

The number of African American/Black optometry students is drastically lower than the number of other minorities in the nation’s Schools and Colleges of Optometry. The objective of the mentorship program is to identify interested African American students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities and facilitate their professional development and career advancement in the field of Optometry.

Nijewel Xavier Robin Malcolm Holliday Memorial Scholarship

Nijewel was a second year student at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico School of Optometry, who had already started making invaluable contributions to the profession. Dr. Jordan Claboine

Treasurer

Jordan Claboine, O.D. obtained his Doctor of Optometry degree from The Ohio State University College of Optometry. Prior to that, he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physiology and Kinesiology from the University of Florida.

Dr. Claboine practices general optometry with a passion for providing exceptional vision and ocular health care to his patients. His extensive clinical training and externship experiences have enriched his expertise in the field. Dr. Claboine's dedication to community service is evident through his involvement in various outreach programs, such as participating in Student Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity (SVOSH) and traveling to Ghana to perform eye exams and provide spectacle correction to populations in need.

Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr. Claboine has demonstrated strong leadership qualities throughout his career. He currently serves as the Treasurer of the National Optometric Association (NOA) and has served as Trustee for the Broward County Optometric Association (BCOA). 

In recognition of his outstanding achievements and contributions, Dr. Claboine received several honors and awards, such as the Mutti Scholarship for inspiring others, the Student Leader of the Year award for his exceptional dedication to student welfare, and The Dr. Lyle Aloysius John Gassmann Memorial Award, recognizing his humanitarian characteristics, leadership qualities, and service to others. With a commitment to excellence, community service, and continuous learning, Dr. Jordan Claboine is a valuable asset to the field of optometry. When he is not seeing patients, he enjoys Muay Thai and traveling to National Parks.

Dr. Shawn Hobbs

President Elect

Shawn H. Hobbs, O.D. is an optometrist at Commonwealth Eye Care Associates, serving patients in Henrico and Colonial Heights, VA. Dr. Hobbs specializes in comprehensive consultation and co-management, treatment of eye diseases and pre and post-surgical care.

Dr. Hobbs attended Montclair State University in New Jersey, graduating with a major in biology. He then attended the New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA, receiving his optometry degree.

He served his internship at the Omni Eye Centers of New Jersey and VA Hospital of Newington, where he focused on the diagnosis and management of ocular disease. He then spent an additional year in an ocular disease residency at the Eye Institute of Essex, Clara Mass Hospital, New Jersey.

Dr. Hobbs entered into a group MD/OD practice in 1994 as the Optometric Director. Since then, he has worked in that same capacity at several large group practices in Richmond. He has served as a liaison between the MD and OD communities, educating both on the value of an integrated co-management model.

In 2000, Dr. Hobbs became an owner / partner at Commonwealth Eye Care Associates where he continues to develop an integrated eye care system of co-management with the OD community. Dr. Hobbs has extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of patients with eye diseases as well as pre and postoperative care. Dr. Hobbs is the past President of the Richmond Optometric Society. He was appointed to the Virginia Board of Optometry in 2024 and currently serving his 4 year term. He was voted "Top Doc” in Richmond Magazine again in 2025, receiving this honor 4 years in a row. He is actively involved in the optometric community and lectures both locally and nationally.

When Dr. Hobbs isn’t out cruising the country backroads on his motorcycle, he can be found playing golf or working out in the gym.

Dr. Mark Orso

President

Dr. Mark Orso is a proud native of Cincinnati, Ohio. He pursued both his undergraduate education and Doctor of Optometry degree at The Ohio State University, completing his studies between 1979 and 1986. Following graduation, he served with distinction as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1986 to 1989, working as a staff optometrist.

Upon returning to Cincinnati in 1989, Dr. Orso began his professional career at York Optometrists. In early 1990, he entered private practice with LensCrafters/Luxottica as a sublease doctor through Sight and Save. When Sight and Save dissolved in 1994, his Northgate location officially became a LensCrafters, where he has continued to practice as a sublease doctor to this day.

Dr. Orso has been an active member of the National Optometric Association (NOA) since 1984. Over the years, he has served in numerous leadership roles including Region II Trustee, Treasurer, Vice President, President-Elect, and currently serves as President.

Dr. Brittany Wright

Vice President

Brittany Wright is an optometrist and assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Sue Anschutz Rodgers Eye Center, University of Colorado School of Medicine. Originally from Chicago, IL, she attended undergraduate and graduate school at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry, graduating with honors. During her time at SCO, she most proudly served as an SCO Ambassador, chapter and national president for the National Optometric Student Association and national vice president of Gold Key International Optometric Leadership Honor Society. 

Dr. Wright completed her residency training in ocular disease and low vision rehabilitation at the Kansas City VA Medical Center. She then went on to join the faculty at the UMSL College of Optometry, as an assistant clinical professor and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Along with didactic instruction in ophthalmic optics, eye health management, and clinical optometry, she supported patient care and student clinical education in UMSL eye centers across the St. Louis metropolitan area.  In 2024, she joined the University of Colorado Department of Ophthalmology as Assistant Professor, serving patients at the Boulder eye clinic. Her current practice and clinical interests include comprehensive care, pre- and post-operative surgical co-management, glaucoma, and posterior segment clinic support. Additionally, health equity strategy and implementation across eye care service delivery are of particular interest.

In additional to the National Optometric Association, Dr. Wright is an active member of several optometric and community organizations, including the American Academy of Optometry and American Optometric Association. She was honored to be selected as a 2024 Theia Award of Excellence recipient by Women in Optometry. 

She enjoys spending time with her family, exploring the front range of the Rockies, and attending live sports events!
